A Day at GOLS

The Fire Breathing Ducky Patrol won a day trip out to the new GOLS property owned by our council. The scouts chose to go canoeing and rock climbing on their trip.

We started the day canoeing on the lake at a nearby state park. The scouts quickly mastered the strokes and they were off racing around the lake. After exploring the surrounding area, the boys decided it was time to head back to GOLS and cook lunch.

After a lesson in fire building, the scouts each tried to start a fire using a flint and steel. Most of the boys were able to ignite a cotton ball that was provided. But it took a professional scouter to come to the rescue and produce a cooking fire. The boys tried their hands at cooking with a stick and making a tinfoil packet dessert.

We were surprised when the local fire department located next door invited us over for a tour of the station. And the boys loved climbing in and out of the equipment. They were really impressed with the photo of the ghost in the burning building.

For our final activity of the day, it was back to GOLS for some indoor rock climbing. The scouts all did their best. They each tried a couple of different paths to the top of the room. And even a couple of parents tried it out.

If you ever get a change to spend a day or a weekend at GOLS we highly recommend it!
